Why choose Cox TV?
Cox’s Contour TV packages have just about every channel you’ve ever heard of, and they start at just $53/mo. But the real cherry on top is that you can get HBO Max, Cinemax, SHOWTIME or STARZ included for free for the first year. You can also bundle TV and internet to save even more.
The only major downside? The DVR plan that’s included only lets you record one show at a time, while streaming services like YouTube TV let you record as many as you want simultaneously.
What we like
Affordable broadcast TV – Cox offers a cheap starting plan with the basics and local channels included.
Cox Contour TV app – Enjoy their channel lineup (120+ live networks) on any Wi-Fi-connected device including smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktops.
One premium network included – You can choose between free HBO Max, Cinemax, SHOWTIME or STARZ for the first year.
Things to consider
Expensive premium plans – Cox’s cable plans go up to $138/mo. for packages with premium channels.
Additional fees – Fees can add up quickly once you’ve chosen your initial Cox TV package. Receiver, regional sports and broadcast fees can add up to a whopping $29/mo.* without DVR or Complete Care.

Cox equipment and fees
Cox TV also provides three DVR rental options. Depending on your recording needs, you can rent the Record 2-HD DVR, Record 6-HD DVR or Record 24-HDR DVR. See below for details.
DVR plans and prices
Equipment | Recording hours | Simultaneous recordings | Price |
---|---|---|---|
Record 2-HD DVR | 250 HD hours | 2 | $13.50/mo. |
Record 6-HD DVR | 250 HD hours | 6 | $20.00/mo. |
Record 24-HD DVR | 1,000 HD hours | 24 | $30.00/mo. |

The difference between the three Cox DVRs
Storage space and the number of shows you can record at a time. While many people likely don’t need more than 100 hours of storage or to be able to record more than two shows at a time, larger families or major sports fans often opt for the more expensive plans.
Receiver plans and prices
In addition to a TV plan and a DVR, you will likely also want to select a receiver. The first Contour HD receiver is included at no extra cost, while each additional receiver costs $10/mo. You can also choose the Basic Box, which provides no access for premium channels or on-demand content or Pay-Per-View, for $4/mo. per receiver. Finally, if you already have a receiver you like, you can rent a CableCARD for $4/mo.
Cox live TV fees
Standard: The prices for Cox Contour TV plans are locked in for the first two years. This is a huge pro in Cox’s favor, as many providers increase prices by up to 50% after the first 12 months. That said, all Cox plans come with additional fees:
- Broadcast fee: up to $13.50/mo.
- Regional sports fee: up to $10/mo.
- Cox early termination fees: $240 minus $10 for every paid month. Cox TV contracts come in 12, 18 or 24 months.
Technical support: Another optional fee is the Cox Complete Care plans, which costs an additional $10/mo. The Cox Complete Care plan covers any technical difficulties you may have, including in-person technician visits. Considering each service call costs $60 on its own, this plan is a good deal if you think you’ll be making more than two calls a year.
Additional Cox TV fees
Along with your monthly TV plan price, you’ll pay additional subscriber fees for broadcasting, regional sports, receiver rentals, installation, activation and taxes. If you choose to add extra equipment like the Cox Contour TV Stream Player, you’ll also find a monthly rental fee for those devices on your statement. See a full list of Cox TV fees and what they really mean before you receive your first monthly bill.
Save more with Cox TV and Cox internet bundles
If you’re looking to save money, you can build a Cox bundle with TV, phone and internet services. Internet and TV bundles start at $47.99/mo. for internet speeds of 50 Mbps and Cox’s Contour Stream Player. In these cheaper packages, no live TV channels are included.
For a live TV and internet bundle, prices start at $127.99/mo. Cox Contour TV Preferred costs $90/mo. on its own, but for an additional $50/mo., you can get internet service with download speeds up to 150 Mbps. Learn more about the Cox duos with two services and bundles with three services to increase your savings and simplify your monthly bill.
Compare Cox TV to other top TV providers
If you’re considering multiple cable TV providers in the area, try a quick comparison of important features like channel counts and pricing to help you decide. Chances are, the cable options in your area are fairly similar to Cox. Which one is best for you comes down to the specific channels they offer, extras like DVR and price.
Provider | Price range* | Channel counts |
---|---|---|
Cox | $53.00 – $138.00/mo. | 75 – 250+ |
DIRECTV STREAM | $69.99 – $149.99/mo. | 65 – 140+ |
CenturyLink | $69.99 – $99.99/mo. | 160 – 290+ |

Cox vs. live TV streaming services
Other cable companies aren’t the only options when you’re shopping around for TV service. You can also sign up for a live TV streaming service no matter where you live. These typically require around 15 Mbps of download speed — well under what most households get — and you won’t need to commit to a contract.
These services are usually cheaper than cable and they often come with perks like unlimited DVR storage and signup discounts. Unfortunately, streaming services don’t always carry regional sports networks, so you might miss out on your local MLB, NHL or NBA team’s games.
Provider | Price range* | Channel counts |
---|---|---|
Cox | $47.99 – $117.99/mo. | 75 – 250+ |
DIRECTV STREAM | $69.99 – $149.99/mo. | 65 – 140+ |
FuboTV | $64.99 – $79.99/mo. | 110 – 157 |
Hulu + Live TV | $64.99/mo. | 75+ |
YouTube TV | $64.99/mo. | 85+ |

Cox customer satisfaction
Considering how others see their Cox TV service can help potential subscribers make an informed decision on whether or not the provider is best for them. Check out how Cox has scored with American Consumer Satisfaction (ACSI) Index from 2017-2021.
ACSI year | Cox TV score |
---|---|
2021 | 62/100 |
2020 | 62/100 |
2019 | 59/100 |
2018 | 60/100 |
2017 | 61/100 |
According to the ACSI, Cox’s customer satisfaction has remained relatively flat over the past five years. Overall, Cox still has consistently ranked in the lower half of subscription TV scores when compared to competitors like Verizon Fios (a score of 71 in 2021) and DISH (66).
Cox customer service
In our experience, Cox’s customer service is relatively easy to get a hold of in a few different ways. You can chat with their online support team 24/7 through their communications portal, or call customer service at 800.234.3993 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. ET on Saturday.
